What is the "Paws For Charity Art Book Project"?

2012 is the fourth annual Art Book curated by me, and the third edition of the Paws For Charity Project. The book will include images of dogs and cats (the "paws" part of the project) contributed by artists and photographers. Artists donate jpeg versions of their images (either artwork or artistic photographs) for use in the project. Copyright of the images remain with the artist.

All proceeds from this year's project will be donated to S.H.A.I.D. Tree Animal Shelter in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia (the "for charity" part of the project).

How will my images be used?

Using contributed jpeg images from artists, the following products are produced and sold with all proceeds being donated to charity. Copyright of the images remain with the artist.

1. Coffee Table Book - published through blurb.com

The book will be 10 inches wide by 8 inches high, and will be published through Blurb.com . Each page will feature the artwork or photographs from one artist. The page will also include a small photo of the artist, a brief bio of the artist, and a brief statement from the artist. My goal is to include a minimum of 65 - 70 artists.

2. Wall Calendar for the calendar year 2013 - published through lulu.com in October

3. Greeting cards - from participating artists (see below)

Tell me more about the greeting cards?

1. Artists will have the option of having one or more of their images printed on blank greeting cards - this is totally optional and not required to participate in the project.

($40 per image for the printing of 25 professionally printed high quality greeting cards, sized 5 by 8 inches. 18 cards and envelopes will be mailed to the artist, 7 cards retained by Paws For Charity and sold through pawsforcharity.etsy.com with all proceeds donated to the designated charity).

2. Artists will have the option of having one or more of their images printed on postcards - this is totally optional and not required to participate in the project.

($20 per image for the printing of 100 professionally printed postcards, sized approx 4 by 6 inches. 75 postcards will be mailed to the artist, 25 postcards retained by Paws For Charity and sold through pawsforcharity.etsy.com with all proceeds donated to the designated charity).

If I am interested in participating, or have some questions, what do I do?

1. Contact Sara: saraharley(at)eastlink(dot)ca

2. Include:

- your full name (as you want it printed in the book),

- your website or blog address,

- the titles of your images,

- a photo of you,

- a brief bio (3rd person, 3 or 4 sentences),

- and an artist's statement (2 or 3 sentences about your artwork, or why you want to be involved in the project, or anything else you'd like to say to the readers)

3. Email up to 5 images (artwork or artistic photographs of dogs or cats...no snapshots of family pets please!) by February 29, 2012. You will be sent a release form when I receive your images. (or I can send it to you before you send your images...just ask)

4. If you have a "paws" image that you think might be good for our front & back book covers, send that along too (will not be included as part of your five submissions)

5. Your images cannot be considered for the project unless a release form is received. Copyright of your images remains with you.

As Becky Boggs began her self-taught nature photography journey in 2001, she was first on a mission to capture nature and share it with other breast cancer patients/survivors. As a survivor herself, she experienced the peace and renewal as she ventured out into her gardens. The drive to share and provide to others the beauty and comfort nature provides has expanded to those facing all sorts of difficulties and challenges. Her images may also be found in hospital hallways, physical therapy venues, breast centers, or perhaps even for sale as greeting cards. Growing up on a dairy farm in West Wales Chris was always very interested in nature and the outdoors, and spent much of his time drawing and painting the wildlife that surrounded him. This has stayed with him to this day and he is never happier than when at home in his studio painting, or when spending time out in the Welsh countryside with his camera.

The Love From Me Project is coming along nicely. The book has been available for sale for a couple of months (available for preview and/or purchase here), and I just heard recently that Blurb.com has approved the book for the "Blurb For Good" program.

This means that Blurb will donate an additional $1 for every book sold to our charity of choice. As I mentioned before, all funds raised from this project are donated to the Rose Fund, a registered charity set up through the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. I sent our first donation a few weeks ago....$600.

This is the third year I have organized an Art Book Project to fund raise for cancer charity....my way of giving back. Of course, this year, with my breast cancer diagnosis and treatments, my reasons for doing it are a lot closer to my heart. As part of the project, the 61 artists were invited to have their images from the book printed on greeting cards. Thirty two artists decided to participate, with 33 images available on greeting cards.

Each artist paid for the printing of their own cards, and they received 17 cards for themselves. Eight cards were kept by me and they are now available for purchase online (www.lovefromme.etsy.com) . Since the artists paid for the printing, ALL proceeds from each sale are donated to the Rose Fund (less shipping costs) .

32 artists participated in the greeting card project - 33 images available

There is one phase left for the project. I'll be designing wall calendars and they will be available later in the year...a perfect gift for Christmas.

Gillian Ireland moved to Vermont from Canada in 1970, and spent her childhood on a small farm in Northern Vermont. She earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Vermont in 1988, and a Master's in Counseling in 1994. . Her camera and her children go everywhere with her and there is usually a story behind every photograph Gillian’s photos celebrate themes and images inspired by nature and her farming roots. She strives to capture a way of life that is quickly disappearing from the Vermont countryside. She looks for anything that gives one the feeling that they are looking through the eyes of the farmer.

Gillian has recently won runner up in the Vermont Department of Parks and Recreation photo contest, and placed first in the people/family life category of the Richford photo contest. I haven't been lucky enough to see these beautiful animals in the wild, but it’s definitely on the wishlist! I was captured by the little baby's fascination with his wee hands, in contrast to the size of his mother's huge gentle hands, it melted my heart and knew I had to paint it. "Around the age of 7, my Aunt bought me a box of Coloured pencils, some of which I still have in my huge collection,it was this that began my love for Art and encouraged me to teach myself how to draw and improve my work over the years. I enjoyed the challenge to perfect the medium. Coloured pencils can be a slow process but is an extremely rewarding one and will always be my favourite as well as my comfort zone. I have worked with Coloured pencils for over 28 years now but have recently begun working with pastels & Acrylic paints too, both of which I enjoy immensely. Meticulous attention to detail is priority in my work and the hardest part of the picture is knowing when to stop.

After leaving school I trained as a Beauty Therapist, under the impression no one could ever make a living out of Art. I went into Self Employment for five years in the Beauty industry, but favoured Nail Art over all the other treatments and would spend the quieter hours of the day painstakingly painting minute images onto my nails, one of which was the Def Leppard ‘Hysteria’ album image for a concert I was attending the next night. It took over 3 hours and required a huge amount of patience, not to mention a very steady hand.
In 2001, I gave up the Beauty Business as it did not give me the spare time I needed to produce any Artwork, aware of the opportunities that appeared more available for Artists, I knew deep down that to become an Artist full time would require a lot of time, patience and dedication, so went back into retail to be able to subsidise my passion. My final wish is to be able to make that dream a reality and to take the huge leap of becoming that full time artist I so desire.

In 2008, I decided to go back to college and study photography. This helped me become more aware of my subjects and to understand the importance of composition in my work too. I have found yet another passion in my life but more importantly it has helped improve my work drastically as well as being the perfect addition to my Art in allowing me to capture creative reference images than ever before.

As a big Animal Lover and strict vegetarian, I also like to produce Wildlife Art that show some of our ever declining animal species and encourage people to join in with conservation efforts, no matter how big or small. I wish to get more involved in this in the future."

Linda is a formally trained artist who has worked in a wide variety of mediums including photography, digital art, printmaking and painting. She was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area where she earned her BFA in Printmaking and was a Digital Painter for Lucasfilm's Industrial Light + Magic.

Over the past decade she has pursued her career in fine art, developing her style in both abstract and representational paintings. Her work is marked by bold uses of color, shapes and patterns but they also maintain an ethereal quality about them.

I started putting together art books in 2009 to raise funds for breast cancer charity. With the help of many talented artists along the way, thousands of dollars have been raised.

In November 2010, I came face to face with my biggest fear. I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My brother died from cancer when I was 16. I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was 21. My sister died 7 years ago, just 3 months after being diagnosed with cancer. After going through two surgeries, and while waiting for radiation treatments, I received advice from many concerned people. I was told to take it easy, and focus on healing myself. It was suggested by a few people that I put my art book project for the coming year on hold.

But I was determined to carry on. I would not let cancer take away something I felt strongly about. I feel good when I look at art. I feel good when I raise funds for charity. And I feel good when I can combine the two things into one project. I sent emails to people I knew, and to people I didn't know. I asked them to consider contributing images to create a book to inspire people...to help people through tough times...for images that made them feel good...images that they wanted to share to help make other people feel good.

This book is the result.

All proceeds from the sale of these books will be donated directly by the book's publisher (blurb.com) to The Rose Fund, c/o The South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. The Rose Fund is a registered charity that has beenset up to help cancer patients who are facing financial difficulty as a result of dealing with their cancer treatments.

I want to thank the artists who have donated the use of their images to make this book, and for sharing pieces of themselves to help inspire others. I hope you will take some time to visit these artists and thank them too.

It has been very quiet on the Love From Me blog, but very very busy behind the scenes. Take a look on the left side of the blog, and you will see a list of all of the participants for the 2011 Love From Me art book. Some of our participants do not have blogs or web sites, so if you click on their names you will end up right back here. The book was completed on the weekend, and uploaded to blurb. I have ordered a test copy and should receive it in a couple of weeks. Once I know everything prints up okay I will make it available to everyone and will give you a link to preview the book and/or order it online. If your image is accepted for publication you will be contacted in late February/early March.
You will be asked for:
1. your name as you would like it to appear in the book
2. the title of your image
3. the story behind your image (ie, what inspired you to make it, or why you think it would inspire others, or any other information you want to share)
4. a high resolution image of your photograph or artwork (300 dpi)
5. a photo of yourself - 300 dpi (this will be cropped square, and changed to black and white)

Introducing The "Love From Me" Project!

2011 is the first year for The Love From Me Project. It was inspired by the 2009 and 2010 Paws For Charity Art Book Project (pawsforcharity.blogspot.com), which was also created by Sara Harley. Paws For Charity raised $5,500 for breast cancer charity.

The purpose of the Love From Me Art Book is to provide inspiration to people going through a period of personal challenge, and to raise funds for cancer charity. The book will be divided into several inspirational themes:
1. Courage, Determination, Strength
2. Family, Friendship
3. Love, Laughter
4. Peace, Serenity
5. Nature
6. Faith

This year's project will include:
1. A coffee table art book
2. Poster and postcards
3. Wall calendar
4. Greeting cards (participation optional)

Editor Sara Harley was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2010, and decided to create the Love From Me Project to provide inspiration and support for people going through challenging times in their lives. The Love From Me Art Book will contain artwork and photography...all designed to inspire and lift the spirits of the reader. Although targeted to cancer patients, the book will be an inspiration to anyone facing life challenges.

All proceeds from the project will be donated to the Rose Fund c/o the Health Services Foundation in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. This is a registered charity created to help cancer patients deal with financial difficulties. You can read the story behind the Rose Fund here.

The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2011. All artwork and photographs will be considered, as long as they fall under the project's themes. (the Paws For Charity Project included only dog and cat images)
